Poopy

I was sure today I'd be regalling you with my delight about the fact that I'd done my measurements for the first time since August and even though I hadn't lost any weight, my how I'd lost sooooo many centimetres from my body proving that the work I was putting in was really showing coz I was clearly toning up. Well I didn't lose any farking cms. Oh a couple off my bust - whoopdedoo! It's so discouraging because I've had so many comments about how thin I'm looking and I honestly feel my upper arms, butt and "bum-bag" tummy have really changed shape and improved. Possibly in areas the tape measure doesn't go? I don't know.

On top of that I put on 200g this week. 76.9kg. POOP. Must get back into a better exercise plan. The lunchtime walking thing didn't happen this week - neither did my swim. Went on a few walk/runs though and bought the new wii active workouts - HIGHLY RECOMMEND - have started the 6 week challenge and so far have done 3 workouts. Make no mistake - sweat was poring down me! The only thing I can think of is maybe I haven't eaten enough this week. Haven't been hungry at all so have been having an iced coffee about 9.30am, yoghurt at 2.30pm and then dinner at 7.30pm. hmmm.

Went and saw Dr Warren Jones one of the fill dudes at Watson's surgery on Wednesday. Told him that there were times that I felt I could eat too much but then at TTOM I'm in agony and I've also been suffering from heartburn lately too. He said definately no fill. According to their scales I'd lost 4kgs since the last time I was there (3months ago). He asked me to book in for another 3 months time because I might need a slight un-fill - especially if TTOM or the heartburn gets worse. I liked him better than Bowater. He reminded me of a 1970's Jack Thompson - kinda geeky surfy dude. He didn't give me a lecture like Bowater usually does which was nice. He also gave me some Pariet to help with the heartburn.

My sisters, mum and I troddled off to take my wedding dress to have the alterations started. It was the first time my mum had seen the dress because she's spent most of the year in Melbourne and she loved it which was a relief. The girls told me I looked super skinny (nice to hear - but probably due to my miracle suit that was sucking me in underneath!!). I'm still worried about my upper arms being bulgy and my oprah wings underneath but not alot I can do about that now aside from my arm weights before bed time!!! I had to have the top taken in about 2-3 sizes but the hips fit well. Hope I don't look too pear shape!

On other wedding news, my sister found a wedding dress today - I had to rush over to the shop to see her in it this afternoon and she looked just beautiful. She's about a size 16-18 which in wedding dresses could mean anything up to a size 22 and of course bigger dressers are harder to come by to try on (I had to take a leap of faith when I ordered mine because it didn't fit over my hips when I tried on the size 12 sample!) Anyway I haven't heard the full story but apparently one of the places today, the lady made her cry coz she was so awful to her. What a farking beeyotch. I don't even know what happened but if I were there I would have given her a piece of my mind! Anyway they went to the place I bought mine from and found this beautiful dress that she's decided is THE one. She looked sooo beautiful and it was gorgeous and flattering and they knocked $150 off the price to put it in her budget. I'm really pleased for her. She's getting married exactly 6 months after us so it's a big year for our family!

Anyway, must go. It's beer o'clock and date night tonight!

PS - It was super cool meeting up with Cara and MOTH last Friday night - check out her blog (The Dash) to see a pic of us!

Latest Update

Hi all, how are you?

I'm feeling quite refreshed from my few days in Melbourne over the weekend. But first things first - weigh in. Was completely ecstatic to have lost 400g this fortnight (no weigh in last Friday as was away). I ate and drank like a champion over the past week, but luckily all the walking around in Melbourne has helped out. I'm now in the 77's!!! YAY! I also did my measurements today. First time since March. I was over the moon with the results. Since March, 5 months ago, I have lost 34.5cm! Here's the results since last time:

  20/03/20097/08/2009      Loss
Neck32  31        1
R Arm3431.5      2.5
L Arm3432         2

Hips113.5100.5        13
R Leg60.556       4.5
L Leg60.556       4.5
          34.5

I'm pretty amazed with the hips and waist measurements. I was wondering what coul have led to this (the previous 3 months I'd only lost 10cm all up), and considering my weight hasn't dropped too much since then and guess what I started on the 19th March? Pilates. Could it be? This is really the only change in my routine. hehehe guess what? I just checked out my weight and I was 87kgs in 20th March so I've lost 9.3kgs since then - avg 490g per week loss. So yeah I have lost weight too but still those measurements are awesomesauce. I have been getting heaps of compliments and although I don't feel like I'm getting smaller, I guess I am toning and reshaping which is great. Still HATE my arms.

Anyway Melbourne was fantastic. GB and I want to move there... one powerball. We stayed at my Aunty's apartment which is about 200m from Chapel St. Ate at Bistro Guillaume - 2009 Best New Restaurant of the Year in Australia. It was awesome. We saw Avenue Q which, whilst slightly disturbing, was pretty bloody hilarious. That night we even walked home from the city (about 5kms). We also had a great lunch at Donovan's in St Kilda - saw Ian Hewie Hewitson having lunch with his family there too! We walked around the DFO in the city and around Bridge Rd and Swan St in Richmond, up and down Chapel Street. It was truly fantastic. Had a great meal at Movida's too which is allegedly Australia's best tapas. I'm still partial to Duende but it was very very good that's for sure.

I had a few issues with PBing and cramps everytime I ate something. I've got a terrible feeling I have a band slip. Also got some nice night reflux last night too. It doesn't matter what time I eat dinner, I always feel like it's still sitting in my easophagus (spelling anyone?) when I go to bed. I have an appointment next Wednesday so I'm going to ask for the dreaded barium swallow to check things out. Fingers crossed it's all good.

Ok well I better get back to work. Will try to catch up on everyone's blogs soon.

Bandiversary Update

12 months. It has been 12 months since the band and I (and GB) started this journey together and it's been a steep learning curve. Both GB and I often comment that sometimes we're slow learners when it comes to working with the band. Perfect example last night. We went out to dinner with GB's family for his neice's birthday. Unfortunately said place refused to grill the fish (can you believe it) so we opted for a caesar salad to share. GB's brother had a seafood basket including chips. Couldn't help myself. Had to have not one but 2 chips! I know that chips and I don't live a harmonious life any longer and sure enough I had to make a couple of trips to the loo to see those chips again! Bugger!

So let's reccap. My starting weight when I first went to Doc Watson was 120.2kg and I'm now 87kgs - over 33kgs lost (32.5 post band).  Here's my measurements change too:

GB has done some awesome things too. He's dropped about 37kgs in 12 months and is only about 4kgs from his goal. He's also lost 100cm off his body! What a superstar!

I'm really proud of what we've both achieved in a year. I'm only a couple kgs heavier now than I was when I last lost the weight a few years ago which I'm relieved about. Now to hit that wedding goal!!!

We went and had a chat with Dr Fill (Bowater) at Doc Watson's surgery yesterday. He was really impressed with our success. He explained that both of us are in the "circle of success" in that the band has done its job in reducing our excess weight by two thirds.  He also said the a BMI of 27 is a researched figure relating to your longevity (not necessarily 22-25 which is just a theory). I told him that I was still struggling to eat sometimes around lunchtime  but usually fine for dinner (as long as I keep away from chips!) and he explained the reason that bandits struggle in the morning (and sometimes around lunch). When we sleep our feet and hearts are all on the same level and about 2L (or kgs) of fluid flows from our feet up to our torso. This fluid increases our stomach sizes which puts pressure on the band and restriction occurs. During the day, gravity takes effect and the extra fluid redistributes again which lessons the restriction. This is the same theory behind why some of us ladies have super restriction at TTOM because of the extra fluid in our bodies.

He reminded us also that as our bodies are getting smaller, so are our stomachs. So whilst we may have the sweet spot of restriction for months at a time, there may come a time that we find ourselves a bit more hungry than usual and looking to graze for food again. That will indicate it's time for a top up. Because our stomachs are shrinking, the band's tightness around our stomach will loosen which is why we'll start to get hungry again. It all makes sense doesn't it!

GB identified that this was a problem he was having at the moment. His last fill was in September last year when we got  back from Europe and he's been beating himself up trying to get under 90kgs the past month or so with no success. So Dr Bowater gave him another .25mls.

So I was pretty disappointed with the 200g loss last week which led to a bit of a binge over the weekend (as much as a bandit can binge!). I ate a truckload of cheese and wine Friday night. Drank big dog coke (ie full strength, not diet) all weekend and decided a quarter of a cheesecake would be appropriate for lunch on sunday. Yeehaa. So not surprisingly after all that, on the monday I sneaked a peak at the scales and was back of 89kgs! Wowser. Been on the straight and narrow this week since then though and overall lost 700g from last week which isn't too bad at all I reckon!

Walked 6km around Bibra Lake on sunday with my sisters. Tuesday did an hour at the gym. 30mins cardio, 30mins weights. Wednesday did 20mins cardio at gym then 15mins on the wii fit (advanced step is HARD!). Thursday I did my first ever Pilates class. And Oh. My. God. They do it at my work during lunch and a couple of girls I know are in the class. They told me that Thursday class is the hard class. Crap. Then the instructor turned up -  not the one they were expecting - and oh, oh it's going to be even harder. Everything burned. Now I can touch my toes (I'm told not everyone can), its much easier now that my giant stomach isn't as giant anymore. But I have ZERO upper body or core or abs strength whatsover... and it burned burned burned. Lordy bigordy. After the class, the girls I know commented that it was a super hard class, but still, I am so crap at it. Anyway, have committed to 10 weeks so will suck it up and hope I don't pass out or fart accidently. After work Thursday I went to the gym and did the Alpine program on the bike at Level 8 for 20mins then just the no program at L9 for 10mins.

In a lovely surprise, on Tuesday night, GB surprised me with tickets to see Phantom of the Opera at Burswood. It was fantastic. And even though GB admitted to nodding off for a minute in the second act, he also loved it. We had a quick bite to eat at Siroccos. He had a pasta with crab meat and chilli and I had the open vegetarian lasagne which was yummo. I only ate half though.

Food this week that made a reappearance:

  • Chips

  • Fruit (incl banana, pineapple, grapes)

GB is off to Darwin for a week tomorrow on a boys trip, so I'll have a week to motivate myself which will be interesting!

Hope everyone is doing well in the bloggerverse.

Measurements Updated

Hey All,

I've updated my measurements on the appropriately titled "Measurements" page. Another 19cm gone this month. I'm pretty happy with that. That brings the total to 54cm since being banded.

Squash was fun. I totally won. I had a bit of trouble serving. And backhands on the full. And backhands with a bounce. And overhead shots. But aside from all that I was awesome. It was a bit difficult to keep score but when we had 1 minute to go on our session I said that who ever wins that rally, wins the game. I won after GB hit the ball over the back screen and across the basketball courts. We're going to try and keep doing it on wednesdays as a bit of a break from the gym and walking. You can definately work up a sweat even if you don't know what you're doing!

Quick Update - 2 months banded

Sorry I haven't updated in a while. Been busy with work and life - you get that! Was running a training course all last week so wasn't in the office on my computer at all! What's been going on?

Weight: put on a bit last week due to having a phat time of life! Eating too much... definately time for a fill!

Measurements: Took monthly measurements and have lost 22cm all over which is more than I lost the month before which is terrific. Will post as soon as I can.

2nd Fill: GB and I went for our second fill on Friday. Doc Watson was very happy with our progress and the exercise we're putting in. He gave us both 1ml taking us to 5ml in 10ml bands.

Eating post fill: Difficult. We had corporate box tix to the Rugby on Friday night after our fill. Couldn't really eat much of anything. GB again had a big task of keeping anything at all down (same as last time). I struggled but was ok. Saturday - didn't eat much of anything - wasn't hungry at all. Had an iced coffee at the shops then nibbled on ham and cheese at GB's parents house that night. And a bit of popcorn at the movies that night - that's it. Sunday, GB made us scrambled eggs for breakfast - neither of us could eat it. It seems we have joined those bandsters who can't eat breakfast. Shame. Did the million paws walk with friends and then went to The Balmoral for lunch and bevvies. I ate a greek salad - had a PB - stupid lettuce leaves. GB didn't eat much of anything. I also shared a small piece of cheesecake with a friend - went down an absolute treat!!! Haven't eaten anything today yet - GB tried an apple - no luck there either.

Anyhoo, that's all I've got to say about that! Hope everyone else's journey is progressing well. I hope to catch up on your blogs this week!

First Fill weekend

Well what an interesting weekend. We definately felt band power! On Friday we didn't eat anything all day after our fill. Then we caught up with some friends at the pub after work and wedges were ordered. We managed to get a few of those down ok. After that my hunger was gone again. However then our friends suggested grabbing italian across the road for dinner (about 9pm). We couldn't really say no so we went. I ordered canneloni which was 2 tubes and a big salad. GB ordered tortellini. I was feeling pretty full after just 1/2 a tube but managed to get through one whole one, leaving a tube and the salad on my plate! GB struggled with his tortellini - didn't chew enough and had to make a trip to the toilet to PB. Poor love, this turned out to happen quite often over the weekend. He ended up eating about 1/3rd of his bowl of pasta.

Saturday morning GB made us scrambled eggs on toast. We both struggled with the toast (GB having a PB) so just ate the eggs. Again I wasn't hungry for lunch at all. GB was helping a mate lay some floor  boards and was given some mini quiches for lunch which apparently didn't go down well and he was back in PB land! Saturday night GB decided he wanted to go to Duende (our favourite restaurant) for tapas for dinner. On such short notice we could only get a seat at the bar but it was really romantic. We started with some olives and the sweetcorn and manchego frittas. Lovely! Then we had some fish carpaccio (raw fish). Next we chose some chicken with yoghurt skewers and some kipfler potatoes with quail eggs. All delicious. The best thing about tapas is you just get really small serves to share and order till your done! We were feeling pretty satisfied after that but I really wanted to try churros. They are long donut king of sticks that you dip in a chocolate sauce. SO DELICIOUS. SO RICH. Afterwards feeling very full indeed! We also managed 2 bottles of wine ... so not so healthy but we ate and drank over about 2.5hrs and was such a lovely night. I recommend Duende for anyone!

On Sunday GB went to do floorboards again and having had issues with bread I decided to try an english muffin. Had to chew chew chew chew chew but got down about one and a half. Then my sisters and my cousin and his girlfriend who were over from Sydney came over for lunch. I served up some olives and cheese and crackers and dip (which i ate some of!) and then we headed to the Balmoral for lunch. I ordered a greek salad (who puts lettuce into a greek salad?) and managed to eat about half of it. GB ordered pasta and again struggled and had to PB.

I wasn't hungry for dinner but I made GB a salad to see if he could keep that down which he did. I feel terrible that he's having a hard time. My recovery period was 10 times more difficult than his but now it seems we've switched. I'm getting good restriction without PBing and he's struggling to keep anything down.

On a positive note, I took his measurements and he's done terrifically, losing 3.5cm off his neck, 10cm from his chest, 10.5cm from his waist and 11cm from his hips! Also a couple of cms from arms and legs. Sensational results!

Anyhoo, best get some work done.

First Fill

Just got back to work from my first ever fill. No dramas at all. We got weighed first off. According to his scales I've lost 5kgs (blah) and GB has lost about 12kgs. Then I hoped on the bed, he asked me to lift my head and look at my toes so he could find the port. Next he cleaned the skin with a wipe. Then he got the local anaesthetic which he warned me would sting briefly which it did. He waited a minute while he prepared the saline then I had to lift my head and look at my toes again and he stabbed me about 3 times (not that I felt anything at all) and injected the saline. All done!

Apparently I have a 10ml band and there is already 2mls in it naturally. He injects everyone with another 2mls on their first visit taking it to 4mls in total. The next fill (in a month) he'll inject another 1ml and then after that it depends on how we're going and finding the restriction.

Funnily I commented to GB before we went in, "I wish we didn't have an appointment at lunchtime, I'm starving!" Then after the fill, nothing, no hunger at all!

Anyhoo, lets hope things go well this weekend. It will be our first real test of living with the band. Must get some work done now, ciao!

Em :)

PS I've updated my measurements... 6weeks from last ones (4weeks from band). Not a bad start. Check the Measurements page for info.
